Platinum Stocks

Properties that make platinum useful include its high melting point, its resistance to corrosion and chemical attack, its catalytic activity, and its malleability. Because of such properties, platinum and its alloys are used in jewelry, dental fillings, and medical instuments ; in the chemical and petroleum industries. Only small amounts are used because platinum is very expensive. Platinum Stocks, platinum is a soft, ductile, silver white metallic element. Its symbol is Pt, its atomic number is 78, and its atomic weight is 195.09. In the periodic table it is a member og group VIII , which includes six precious metals, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum. They are called the platinum group metals, or simply the platinum metals.

Platinum Properties
Platinum does not readily combine with oxygen or sulfur compounds in the air and thus retains its silvery luster in jewelry. Compact platinum, as for jewelry, is obtained by melting the spongy form.

Platinum Discovery
Platinum was discovered in gold bearing deposits in colombia in by the spanis scientist. The new metal first came to the attention of European scientist in the mid-18th century, the English chemist. And Wollaston also was the first to devise a way to produce platinum in a workable form suitable for commercial purpose.

Platinum Uses
Platinum began to be used for jewelry. A small amount of an alloying element such as iridium is added in jewelry because the alloy is harder than pure platinum.
Platinum is used for electrical contacts and spark-plug electrodes, and a platinum-cobalt alloy is used in making powerfull magnets. Platinum wires can be sealed into glass and used to conduct electricity to the inside of a glass tube or bulb. In glass industry platinum and its alloys are used to contain, stir, or convey molten glass.
